I tried that new hairdo- the one it seems everyone has, a little shorter in the back. I guess you have to back comb it to give it the lift it needs for the full effect.
I can't backcomb.
I remember it being called teasing or ratting when my mom used to do it.
Now, that is the generation of high hairdos.
I think it was when they coined the phrase, " The higher the hair, the closer to God."
My mom had a mini tower of Babel on her head.
She would go to the beauty parlor, usually in another woman's basement, and a half a bottle of hairspray come out with a beehive to the sky.
Now.... she had a secret to keeping this masterpiece in top condition-
she wrapped her hair in toilet paper and then bobby pinned a pair of silk panties over that.
Yep, I am not kidding.
If you are old enough to remember the pink hair tape, that was on the sides. It kept the little curls in place. In the morning she removed the panties and tp and refluffed with a pick and voila !!
The 80's came along and we had our own big hair.
Feathered or layered, lots of poof. Even the boys wore their hair that way,
I guess it went with spandex.
In my late 30's I went to a salon and asked if anyone could or would do an 80's style.
One woman knew what I was talking about. She said,"You mean the toilet paper roll or the butt crack."
WHAT!?
If your hair was thin, it stayed in long ringlets along side your face, kind of a de-flated Farrah Fawcett.
If your hair was thick, like mine, you swooped it back and the sides met in the middle of your head. I had two giant poofs of blond hair coming together to form a .....
you guessed it.
I decided not to get the 80's look again.
So now- I try to back comb my hair and it doesn't work-
not enough hair spray?
no silk panties?
I am not sure what I am doing wrong.
But, I am sure of this....
never sit behind a big haired lady in church or at a movie
and boys should never have big hair or... wear spandex.
