Buffet Media Stand

My daughter and I were driving when these lovely legs sticking up by the trash caught my eye. I mean these were some nice gams! I couldn't look away.

We quickly pulled over and saw this beautiful buffet just laying on the ground. Now...no drawers, no doors and a chippy veneer, but solid as a rock, so .... we wrestled her into my daughter's little Murrano, the door wouldn't even close but we drove home with the prize hanging out the back end!

And what a prize!!

We first tackled the veneer,

I am thankful my husband has more upper arm strength than I will ever have because as a two man team we worked about an hour scraping off the warped veneer. I held the heat gun as he scraped and pulled. He worked up quite a sweat!

I decided since this piece was for me, to leave the top as is, I lightly sanded but did not fill in worm holes or imperfections, I just used Minwax stain over the top and a couple coats of polycrylic on the top and painted with some white laytex on the bottom. We did use 1/4 " board to even out the drawer areas, cut to size and stapled in. After some distressing it was the perfect piece, Really, in the trash?

The next day we thought, let's drive by that trash again, just to see if they threw out the drawers and no, they didn't but they did add these. Can you say head first into the dump, both my husband and I were like kids in a candy store!

Tossed because of broken glass, which I for one am not a fan of anyway, 1/4" slat boards turned it into another fabulous curbside save!

Vintage Radio Dry Bar

We found a couple beautiful 1930's radio cabinets, in non working order and decided to give them new life as dry bars or book shelves.

Even the befores were lovely, but they showed their years and needed some freshening up. After gutting and cleaning out years of dust, and an addition of shelves, we addressed the cosmetic. One needed a bit of putty to repair chipped laminate, the other did not. I wish there had been no need for the putty, because I love the radio that was able to stay as original as possible a bit more than the one painted.

The best condition model was able to be cleaned and then hi-lighted with some Modern Masters metallic brass paint. This paint is beautiful!

Some hints for using it, the opaque covers quickly and the semi opaques can take a few coats. In fact while drying it can look awful but will smooth out as it dries.

Next, they sell an extender, which I highly recommend, especially for the semis, it will keep the paint from drying too quickly, pulling when going over the same area, and it will create a more workable product. In fact, it will make your life much easier and eliminate paint stress

so just get some and use it!

Note- you can see I picked this up at a Restore, Habitat for Humanity. It is NOT this cheap, in fact I got all of this for about the price of one jar!! Pricey but elegant

After the brass paint a few details were added with Annie Sloan chalk paint, the same paint we used on the other model. Painted in Cocoa and highlights in Cocoa mixed with Old White, I then did some dry brush to help tie the interior to the front. Both were sealed with poly acrylic to extend surface wear and give them a healthy shine.

Both charming pieces found a new home very quickly!
