This year has been busy and I find myself spending my days in paint stained clothes, with green elbows, white fingertips and pink hair. Always unintended. I am one of those less than neat painters, to say the least. But I have managed to gather together some before and after shots to show you what I have been up to. And to announce I closed the SouthernBelle NorthernRoots facebook page and am running all paint/decor and blog posts through the page .
Last weekend we found two of our best finds, a buffet in need of a new paint job, you can see a hint of it in the background of the above photo, and a lovely 1930's radio. These just happen to be two pieces on my list of projects I wanted to do, so I was super excited to find them at great prices.
We decided to keep the radio and convert it to a wine rack. I love the classic look and height of the piece. We gutted the non working parts and placed a standard expandable wine holder in the back. Because the unit faces an indirect sun source, I added a pull down burlap backing.
It is painted in Annie Sloan Old Ochre and sealed with a mix of light and dark wax. I am loving the way she looks.
I also came across a great bones vanity. Scuffed and time worn, yet sturdy. The debate was to keep as a vanity or to separate. It became quickly obvious by facebook friends and the design of the piece that it was a great candidate for separation. Missing a mirror and back board but having complete tops made it easy.........
Until the center was removed. Furniture was simply made well back in the early years of the 20th century, so everything was deeply grooved, glued and nailed together. Large gaps had to be filled and puttied and a few pieces of replacement wood added. That is where my husband is able to be such a help, far out of my league and WAY out of my "want to" area, he steps in and does all the heavy repairs.
We ended up with two stunning side tables in French Linen and Duck Egg. So stunning that they sold via Facebook, with several inquiries, and a wait list in case it fell through. Within 4 hours of posting, they were out of my house and onto their new home.
Back in the 80's, maybe 70's, my dad made this adorable secretary. I was lucky enough to get it on our trip to Mississippi this Summer.
A little updo, and it is now a fixture piece in our bedroom.
Our last sale of the year is in two weeks, so things will slow down and maybe I will have some time to do......something that doesn't involve paint? Probably not, as I have pushed several needed personal projects to the background. But I do hope to get back to blogging a bit more and reopen my Etsy shop.
This little bench will be at the sale, painted in blue oops latex dry brushed with graphite and yellow. Hand painted graphics via The Graphics Fairy. With many doos and dads, lots of vintage bricolage, garage and flea finds loaded up , I am hoping snow won't fall and we have a great end of the year sale. If you are in Fargo ND November 1-2 Be sure to stop in to and say Hi!

Pretty items. Love the colors!
Wow - some of these have really transformed. I'm especially loving that 1970s/80s secretary redo. What a perfect color. You should come share on my blog later today for my Thrifty Things Friday party that opens at noon! :)
All great pieces...I love the little twin stands and the bench especially. Best of luck on your sale. I lived in Fargo when I was a very young girl from about kindergarten through 2nd grade. Michigan is cold. Fargo was colder!
Wow, you've been busy. I love the vanity side tables and the old radio, which looks like it has some Versailles in it. Your dad's secretary looks so sweet now. I saw your link at Ivy and Elephants. Ann Marie @ Iris Abbey
Shannon, all of the are gorgeous! My favorite has to be the secretary that your Father made. Love the color! Would you mind telling me what it is? The radio turned out darling and I love the color of it also. Thanks for sharing with SYC.
hugs,
Jann
